Man Caves

While not a new idea, the man caves concept is, without question, growing in populariity.

The man cave is the space that the man of the house gets to call his own.

The space that's tailored to his specific interests. A refuge of sorts.

Dedicated to...

  • The favorite football team
  • The favorite baseball team
  • The favorite basketball team
  • Cars
  • Motorcycles
  • Boats
  • Racing
  • Fishing
  • A place to play pool
Whether it's in the basement, the garage, the attic, or somewhere outside like a barn or shed, the man cave can be a place to disappear to and unwind for a while.

What are the requirements?

The key ones are...

  • A TV - preferably a big screen if the budget allows for it.
  • A bar of some sort...even if you just start out with a small refrigerator.

Then you can add...

  • An audio system
  • Pool table
  • Games
  • Whatever suits you

Additional benefits...

  • Hang your own stuff on the walls...the things your wife doesn't want in the house.
  • If you don't want to clean it...you don't have to clean it.
  • Creating the space doesn't have to cost a lot, depending on how much you want to do yourself.
  • You have the option of using less expensive, rescued furnishings, or deals from places like Craigslist and Ebay.

The Man Cave Alternative

Though the idea of a Man Cave offers great potential, the truth is, the concept just doesn't work in every situation.

The alternative is to create a space that tones down the "manliness" just a little bit. A space that can be shared. A family recreational space.

By approaching the concept from a little more tasteful and subdued perspective, the space becomes a place where the wife or girlfriend can feel comfortable, the kids can watch TV, and other friends or couples will fit in when invited.

And let's not forget the investment value of a project like this. If done right, it can help raise the value of the home, and make the home easier to sell when the time is right.

Proper planning is key to any successful project, and although there are times when some unforseen situation might arise, that's less likely to happen, and less likely to significantly impact the outcome of the project if the advanced planning has been done carefully.

Setting a realistic budget is another considertion. Though there are varying price levels for the many products you may wish to include, it's typically advisable not to skimp on quality of the original build. You may regret it later on.
